Spittelau Waste Incineration Plant, Vienna, Austria

Municipal incinerators are generally not seen as architectural highlights; however, in Vienna, they stand as a notable exception. A prime example is the Spittelau incinerator, designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser, which features a distinctive appearance reminiscent of a contemporary art museum. It serves as one of Vienna's municipal waste incinerators, generating energy for approximately 50,000 households and providing heating and warm water to 60,000 residents. Originally constructed in the late 1960s, the facility underwent significant repairs following a fire in 1987, creating an ideal opportunity for upgrades. Authorities enlisted the renowned artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser to redesign the chimney and façade, a project completed by the early 1990s. While Hundertwasser is primarily known for his paintings, his contributions to architecture and design have profoundly impacted the public.
