Attack of the Bark Beetles
The Mohos peat bog is one of the most important botanic nature reserves in Romania. It is part of the Mohos Nature reserve. The attack of the bark beetles started in 2012 on a few Scots pine trees (Pinus sylvestris) in the northern part of the bog. In 2013-2014 the bark heetles multiplied drastically becauce of the drought. The trees are attacked firstly by bark beetles on the top of the tree (Ips acuminatus, Pityogenes bidentatus, P. quadridens, P. bistridens) and the tree trunk (Ips sexdentatus, Blastophagus minor, Pissodes notatus, Blastophagus piniperda) boring the bark and making long channels of different shape for egg deposition. The bark beetles are 4-7 mm long. As a pest control measure 200 pheromone traps have been installed. The secondary attack is made by xylophagous insects (Callidium violaceum, Criocephalus rusticus, Tetropium castaneum, Trypodendron lineatum). These species bore into the wood, totally destroying the trees. The xilophagous insects are between 15-27 mm long.
