Lake Botos (Poás Volcano)
Lake Botos is located in the southern part of the volcano - a beautiful crater lake surrounded by impressive a tropical cloud forest, located 870 m above sea level. This is a more ancient crater which last erupted some 7,500 years ago. For the most part it behaves like a common lake but sometimes the water gets heated several degrees by volcanic heat.
In areas with less frequent acid rain the plant diversity is considerably higher - the lower montane forest is very rich with orchids and bromeliads, tree ferns and the spectacular poor man's parasol.
