Three-toed Sloth

This mild-mannered creature is the world's slowest animal and is so immobile at times that algae grow on its brown furry back. This, however, helps to camouflage and nourish them as they lick it off themselves.

Sloths have a short and flat head, big round eyes, a snout that is short in length, long tree-climbing legs, a stubby tail and small ears and though some have called them ugly, they have the cutest face that looks like they are always smiling.

According to the National Geographic, they are found in the tropical rainforests of South and Central America and are on the endangered species list due to human hunting and their rapidly dwindling natural habitat. They spend most of the day sleeping upside down in trees (between 15 and 20 hours a day) but even when they are awake you won't see them move much. They move by "walking" upside down along branches with a hand over hand motion. They rarely come out of the treetops and though they are quite clumsy on the ground, they are very good swimmers. They are well equipped for a life in the trees with their long legs and curved claws which they use to hang upside down from thick branches.

They are nocturnal plant eaters, eating shoots, leaves and fruit. They have a very slow metabolism and a low body temperature; they don't need to eat or drink much and go for many days without. They are mainly herbivores but have been known to eat small insects and even lizards.

They even mate and give birth while hanging in trees. Their mating season is said to be all year round. They give birth once a year and stay pregnant for six months of that year. They have a life span of 10 - 20 years and their main predators besides humans are jaguars, harpy eagles and ocelots. There is unfortunately not much this shy creature can do when threatened but to swipe with their long claws in hopes of hurting a predator.
