Sacred fig tree's (Ficus Religiosa) base is usually colorfully decorated by the local Thais. Also known as Bodhi tree or Banyan tree. Buddha was said to have sat under such a tree when he received enlightenment. Animists also believe that spirits dwell in these trees. Ribbons are tied to appease the spirits and protect the trees. The practise is widespread in Thailand.
